Young Diabetic Spotlight: A Personal Journey with Diabetes

Talking to young diabetics about their experiences can be super inspiring and relatable. Here’s a peek into how some of them manage life with Type 1 diabetes.

Q1: What has been the most helpful thing you've learned about managing your diabetes?

Honestly? That it’s okay to mess up. There were days when I’d freak out over a high or low number, but learning to look at patterns instead of just individual readings has helped me chill out.

Q2: Are there any daily routines or habits that make managing diabetes easier for you?

For me, it’s checking my blood sugar as soon as I wake up. It sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Making it a habit to carry snacks everywhere. Low blood sugar strikes when you least expect it—like in the middle of a math test!

Q3: Do you have any advice for others your age who are also managing diabetes?

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Some days will be harder than others, but it doesn’t define you.

Find a buddy who gets it—Having someone to share the ‘ugh’ moments with is a game-changer.

Q4: Are there any activities or hobbies that help you feel balanced and healthy?

I love swimming. It’s great exercise and helps keep my blood sugar steady.

Drawing and journaling. It’s my way of unwinding when diabetes feels overwhelming.

Q5: How do you like to talk about your diabetes with friends, if at all?

I keep it simple: ‘My pancreas is broken, so I use insulin to fix it.’ Most of my friends are cool about it and even remind me to check my sugar sometimes.

I’m open about it because it’s a part of me. Plus, it’s a great excuse to educate people when they have weird misconceptions.

Q6: What do you do when you're having a tough day managing your diabetes?

Vent to someone who gets it. My mom’s always been my go-to person when I feel frustrated.

I put on my favorite playlist, eat a snack, and remind myself that tomorrow is a new day.

Q7: Is there anything that makes managing diabetes at school or during activities easier for you?

Teachers who actually understand what diabetes is. One of mine even keeps snacks in her drawer for emergencies!

Every young diabetic has their own unique way of handling life with Type 1, but the common theme is resilience and learning to adapt. What would *you* add to this list? Or better yet, how would you answer these questions? Drop your thoughts in the comments below! 😊
